The cleaning industry runs on shortcuts — vague pricing, rotating cleaners, and rushed work that leaves you wondering what you actually paid for. We built Houmse to operate the opposite way. Every part of how we work — from how we set prices to how we approve cleaners to how we handle problems — is designed around one simple idea: do what you said you'd do, every single time. How we write about the industry — including where our commercial interest sits — is in our editorial standards.
These are the most common frustrations with cleaning services. Here's how Houmse handles each one.
Problem 01
The problem
Most cleaning companies show one price, charge another. Supply fees, travel fees, "extra time" charges — none of it explained upfront.
The Houmse way
One flat-rate price, shown before you book. The number you see is the number you pay. Add-ons priced clearly during booking, never sprung on you afterward.
Problem 02
The problem
High turnover means a stranger in your home each time. You explain your space from scratch. Your preferences get lost. Quality becomes a coin flip.
The Houmse way
Once you find a cleaner you like, they're yours. Same person on every recurring visit. They learn your home, your priorities, your quirks. Cleaning gets better over time, not worse.
Problem 03
The problem
Cleaners rushed through tight schedules cut corners. Behind the toilet. Under the bed. Inside the microwave. The places you actually notice get missed.
The Houmse way
A detailed room-by-room checklist on every visit. Same standard, every time. If something's missed, we come back within 24 hours and fix it — free of charge.
Problem 04
The problem
You're letting a stranger into your home, often when you're not there. Most companies skip background checks. Many aren't insured. If something goes wrong, you're on your own.
The Houmse way
Every cleaner is background-checked, ID-verified, and carries $2M commercial liability insurance — backed by Houmse's own $2M policy on every booking.
Problem 05
The problem
Cleaning companies are great at booking. Less great at responding when something doesn't go right. Calls go unanswered. Complaints get deflected. You're left frustrated.
The Houmse way
Real human support, fast. Reschedule, skip, or flag a problem — we respond within hours, not days. Backed by the Houmse 24-Hour Re-Clean Guarantee. No arguments, no hoops.
The cleaner in your home matters more than anything. Here's how we approve independent contractors before their first booking.
We assess work ethic, attention to detail, and communication before anything else.
Every applicant provides at least two prior client or employer references. We call all of them.
An Enhanced Canadian Criminal Record Check is completed before any cleaner enters a client's home, with no exceptions.
Identity is verified through OneID, which authenticates government-issued ID documents against a selfie taken at the time of verification.
Every new cleaner trains with our standard checklist before their first solo visit.
We approve selectively — only the candidates who pass every step.
